Learn more about BTMS (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) down below and why we decided to opt out of using them in our bath bombs as well as all our products.

What is BTMS?

Behentrimonium Methosulfate, aka (BTMS) for short, is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound derived from rapeseed oil. This is produced from the seed of the bright yellow flowers of oilseed rape, a member of the brassicaceae family and besides its name states, it is actually sulfate free. This particular ingredient is found in many bath and body products around the world from moisturizers, baby lotions and conditioners, to soaps, bath bombs, make-up, and even in some chocolates.  So, if it's derived from rapeseed oil and is in so many products, it sounds safe enough, right? While technically it has been determined "safe for use in cosmetics", (subject to concentration, use limitations and certain qualifications), then again, so is sulphates, parabens, and carcinogens, ect.

Given the molecular structure of BTMS, along with its positively charged ions, this ingredient can easily penetrate deeply into skin and hair strands, while providing a silky, moisturized feel and a fabulous detangler/conditioning agent. How ever it does not come without its downsides. Not only did we find BTMS very toxic to aquatic life, but reports have shown some moderate concern for asthma and respiratory issues, skin allergies and irritations as well as developmental and reproductive toxicity. Although we would never rag on others for using BTMS in their products, because after all, it is technically deemed "safe" to use with in limitations for cosmetic practices, we just prefer to skip this step all together. It may require just a little extra work and tweaking involved on our end for formulating products to meet the expected performance guidelines, but for our family as well as yours, it's well worth it!

Ingredients

Baking Soda, Citric Acid, Corn Starch, Powdered Milk, Kaolin Clay, Grapeseed Oil, Xanthan Gum, Cream of Tartar, fragrance and/or essential oils, witch hazel, isopropyl alcohol, skin safe color pigments

Note- Pending on the type of bath bomb you purchase, some contain 1 or both of the following ingredients: SCI (sodium cocoyl isethionate) or SLSa (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate) best practice to refer to the specific "product ingredient picture" above for full list of ingredients.

SCI: Derived from the fatty acids in coconut oil, it is known to be gentle on the skin and scalp, which is why it is sometimes refurred to as "baby foam". This compound is a good sulfate[free alternative for people who want to avoid commonly known surfactants such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) which is sometimes confused with SLSa.

SLSa: is derived from natural plant sources and is completely free of all sulfates. It is a mild and versatile surfactant that produces a rich foam without irritation and because of its molecular size, it also does not penetrate the skin or cell membranes.
